Congrats — your new Trezor

Welcome! This page walks you through the safest and simplest way to get your Trezor set up, secure your recovery, and start using it with confidence.

Before you start — quick checklist

Quick checklist: a clean desk, the Trezor device and cable, a pen & paper (for your recovery seed), and a secure location to store the written backup. Avoid taking photos of your recovery seed and never enter it on a website or app.

Step-by-step setup

1. Visit the official start page

Open trezor.io/start from your computer's browser. This page will guide you to download the correct Trezor Suite or web interface and show official firmware & install instructions.

2. Connect and verify

Connect your Trezor to your computer with the cable. The device will display a short greeting and ask you to confirm that you’re using an official interface. Only accept pairing prompts shown on the physical device screen — never accept instructions that appear only on your computer without verification on the device itself.

3. Install and update firmware

Follow the prompts to install the latest firmware. Trezor devices require firmware updates when shipped — updating ensures you have the latest security fixes. Confirm every prompt on the device’s screen with the physical buttons.

4. Create a new wallet & PIN

Choose “Create a new wallet”. You will set a PIN — pick a PIN you can remember but that others can’t guess. The PIN protects the device itself; even if someone has physical access, they’ll need the PIN to reach account functions.

5. Write down your recovery seed

The device will display your recovery seed (12, 18, or 24 words depending on model/options). Write those words down in order on a physical recovery card. Keep that paper in a secure, fire- and waterproof place. This is the only backup to restore your funds if the device is lost or broken.

6. Verify the seed

After writing the seed down, the device will ask you to confirm random words. This ensures you copied it correctly. Do this carefully — a single mistaken word will make the backup unusable.

7. Finish and explore

Once verified, your wallet is ready. Open Trezor Suite or the web wallet and explore: add accounts, check addresses, and learn how transactions look before sending any funds.

Security best practices

  • Never share your recovery seed. No legitimate software, company, or support person will ever ask for it.
  • Never type the seed into a phone or computer. That creates risk of malware capturing it.
  • Keep a physical, offline backup. Consider using two backups stored in different secure locations (safe deposit box, home safe).
  • Use a strong PIN and enable passphrase (optional). A passphrase adds another layer — but if you forget it, the funds are unrecoverable. Use passphrases only if you understand the trade-offs and can secure them safely.
  • Beware of phishing. Always navigate to trezor.io/start manually or use saved bookmarks. Confirm URLs, and only download software from official links.

Common questions

What if my device asks to install unsigned firmware?

Do not install firmware that is unsigned or that did not originate from the official Trezor update flow. If in doubt, visit trezor.io/start and follow the official instructions.

Can I back up the seed digitally?

We strongly recommend against digital backups (photos, cloud notes, screenshots). The safest method is an offline, physical backup. If you must use a digital method, use hardware-encrypted storage and understand the risks.

What happens if I lose my Trezor?

Your funds are safe as long as the recovery seed is secure. Use the seed to restore the wallet on another Trezor or compatible hardware/software wallet that supports the same recovery standard.

Is the recovery seed the only backup?

Yes. The recovery seed is the master backup for your wallet. Keep it safe and treat it like currency: physical, private, and priceless.

Using your Trezor day-to-day

For regular use, the recommended pattern is: keep most funds in cold storage (your Trezor) and move a small spending amount to a hot wallet for daily transactions. When sending from the Trezor, always verify the transaction details (recipient address, amount, fee) on your device’s screen before approving.

Troubleshooting

  • Device not recognized: try a different cable or USB port; ensure you’re using a data-capable cable (some cables are charge-only).
  • Firmware failed: retry via the official update page. If problems persist, contact official support through the website.
  • Forgot PIN: the device can be reset to factory settings, but you will need your recovery seed to restore your wallet. If you lose both the PIN and seed, funds are unrecoverable.
